Australian Motorsport has a long association with the October long-weekend, and in 2020, West Bremer Radio will add a new chapter to that storied history, by presenting LIVE and EXCLUSIVE coverage of the 2020 Queensland Karting Championship, which will be held at the Ipswich Kart Club, in Willowbank.

In what’s been a difficult year for grassroots motorsport, the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the postponement of this event, originally scheduled to be staged at the Emerald Kart Club, on the opening weekend of July. With Emerald unable to host the event, the Ipswich, Warwick and Cooloola Coast Kart Clubs have stepped in, to co-host proceedings, at the 1.08km Ipswich Kart Club circuit.

Despite current border closures ruling out a vast majority of competitors from New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia, this is still shaping up to be the biggest karting event staged in Queensland this year.

Competitors as young as seven will contest this event, which will see twelve classes in action, as Queensland’s best fight for state supremacy.

West Bremer Radio – Ipswich’s own Live and Local online radio station – will present extensive coverage of the championships, and, in a station first, the racing will come your way LIVE.

Coverage of the Championships will be anchored by West Bremer Radio’s Motorsport commentator, Zak Caban, and Caban will commentate all the action alongside his regular Motorsport sidekick, ‘the encyclopedia of Queensland Motorsport’, Mark Jones.

Caban is no stranger to karting, having previously been a competitor himself, before commentating events, at both club and state level, right across New South Wales, between 2007 and 2018.

Dating back to 2017, he’s served as a trackside commentator for Queensland Raceways, and for the past twelve months, he’s been part of the on-air team at West Bremer Radio, which has included the presentation of selected Queensland Motorsport events.

Speaking about this event, Caban couldn’t wait to get trackside.

“A colleague of mine put it best when he said that karting is the purest form of Motorsport, and on its day, a good karting race can deliver the excitement of a Hyundai Excel and Formula Vee race COMBINED… the intensity on a state championship weekend is something else, and the track here in Ipswich lends itself to close, fast, action packed racing, so, you don’t want to miss this.”

“Of course, Karting is where it all starts. The future stars of Australian Motorsport start here. In 2002, I watched Chaz Mostert win the Pacific Coast Titles meeting, in what was then known as the Midgets class – now ‘Cadet 9’, at the Port Macquarie Kart Club, and look where he is now… a Bathurst 1000 winner, still going round in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, so I really look forward to introducing the West Bremer Radio audience to the future stars of this sport… names they’ll hopefully remember when they’re hearing a lot more of them, in five-ten years from now.

The platforms of West Bremer Radio will deliver three days of coverage, close to TWENTY hours of action, across West Bremer Radio, and West Bremer Sport.

Coverage commences on Friday, October 2, with the all-important Qualifying sessions, EXCLUSIVE to West Bremer Sport, before racing commences on Saturday morning, and champions are crowned on Sunday afternoon.

West Bremer Radio listeners will join West Bremer Sport’s coverage from 10am AEST on Saturday morning – straight after ‘The Week End Sports Swich’ – with coverage continuing right through until 4:30pm AEST, when attention will then turn to the Round 10 Volunteers’ Cup Rugby League ‘Match of the Day’, between the Gatton Hawks and the Toowoomba Valleys Roosters, LIVE from the Cahill Park Sports Complex.

On Sunday, West Bremer Radio will join the trackside action from 11am Queensland Time (make a note of that, as Daylight Saving starts, across the rest of the East Coast AND South Australia, on Sunday morning), straight after the latest edition of Goin’ Feral.
